It\u2019s an interesting move given that users could already do voice search on the mobile web, with the Android keyboard microphone.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A new mic icon.<\/strong>\u00a0Below are screens from Android on the left and the iPhone on the right, showing Google.com search results. The iPhone doesn\u2019t show the mic, although the keyboard allows voice input. The search phrase is \u201cwhat percentage of mobile queries are voice searches?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Beyond the microphone icon inside the search box, the major difference \u2014 a significant one \u2014 is that users will hear a spoken response now with Android mobile web searches rather than simply get a set of \u201csilent\u201d results. This voice response may encourage people to undertake more searches while their eyes are occupied, such as when they are cooking or driving.<\/p>\n<p>This may or may not technically be the Google Assistant in action. So Google isn\u2019t offering a new capability and most users probably aren\u2019t doing the bulk of their searches on Android phones from Google.com.<\/p>\n<p>So what is Google doing? In one sense it\u2019s just making voice search and the Assistant ubiquitous, so that any entry point for Google search offers a consistent experience. It\u2019s also further training people to use voice and interact with the Assistant, which is a cross-platform utility and thus \u201cbigger\u201d than search.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why you should care.<\/strong>\u00a0In 2016 Google\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/searchengineland.com\/google-reveals-20-percent-queries-voice-queries-249917\">announced<\/a>\u00a0that 20 percent of mobile queries were voice searches. Since that time the company has not updated its numbers, though almost certainly the figure is larger today.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s important to distinguish between voice search on smartphones and smart speakers. In the latter context, we have\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/searchengineland.com\/what-3000-voice-search-queries-tell-us-about-the-voice-search-revolution-291441\">an emerging channel<\/a>\u00a0whose use cases are still not well established. With smartphones we have the primary search device being used today.<\/p>\n<p>As Google trains users to search via voice and pushes the Assistant front and center, snippets and structured data become even more important. There are already\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/searchengineland.com\/seo-2018-optimizing-voice-search-288078\">voice optimization best practices<\/a>that marketers should be following.
