Here&#8217;s why.<\/h2>\n<div class=\"body-content\">\n<p>Earlier this year, Google announced that they were offering an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/searchengineland.com\/google-offers-improved-gmb-sign-up-flow-for-service-area-businesses-310777\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">improved sign-up flow for service area businesses<\/a>. There have been lots of questions from the Local Search community about these changes and what they mean. I\u2019m hoping to clarify some of that by pointing out the main things you need to know.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1.<\/strong>\u00a0Instead of having a box you have to check that says you deliver goods and services to your customers at their location, you\u00a0<strong>now have the option to clear your address.<\/strong>\u00a0This function accomplishes the same thing; it just has new wording. Clearing your address will turn your listing into a service area business which will remove the directions icon, remove the maps pin, remove the listing from the Google Maps API and hide your address from the public.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-312178 lazyloaded\" src=\"https:\/\/searchengineland.com\/figz\/wp-content\/seloads\/2019\/02\/image2-6.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"839\" height=\"471\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/searchengineland.com\/figz\/wp-content\/seloads\/2019\/02\/image2-6.png\" data-lazy-srcset=\"https:\/\/searchengineland.com\/figz\/wp-content\/seloads\/2019\/02\/image2-6.png 839w, https:\/\/searchengineland.com\/figz\/wp-content\/seloads\/2019\/02\/image2-6-600x337.png 600w, https:\/\/searchengineland.com\/figz\/wp-content\/seloads\/2019\/02\/image2-6-768x431.png 768w, https:\/\/searchengineland.com\/figz\/wp-content\/seloads\/2019\/02\/image2-6-800x449.png 800w\" data-lazy-sizes=\"(max-width: 839px) 100vw, 839px\" data-was-processed=\"true\" \/><strong>2.<\/strong>\u00a0If you\u2019re a service area business and your address was cleared,\u00a0<strong>don\u2019t try to add it back.<\/strong>\u00a0When Google started rolling this out in November 2018, they automatically cleared the addresses for any existing service area business listings. This caused a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.localsearchforum.com\/threads\/huge-change-for-service-area-businesses-in-google-my-business.53409\/page-4#post-150042\" rel=\"noopener\">ton of confusion<\/a>\u00a0for people who logged into their dashboard and saw their address was \u201cmissing.\u201d If you attempt to add the address back, it will make you reverify it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3.<\/strong>\u00a0Even though your address is missing,\u00a0<strong>Google still knows where you are.<\/strong>\u00a0The purpose of the feature is to hide the address from the public.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4.<\/strong>\u00a0There is\u00a0<strong>no longer an option to add a service area<\/strong>\u00a0that is a radius around your location. You instead need to add a list of zip codes or cities.<\/p>\n<p><strong>5.<\/strong>\u00a0Your\u00a0<strong>ranking is still based on the address<\/strong>\u00a0used for verification\u00a0<b>not<\/b>\u00a0what you put in the service area.
