In school, I put off writing essays until the day before they were due. At home, the dishes pile up and out of the sink more often than I&#8217;d like. Putting things off can be a real problem in my life and I know I\u2019m not alone.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve talked to other procrastinators of all types\u2014from slacker students to fearful entrepreneurs to creatives who religiously refuse to start a project until there\u2019s a deadline staring them in the face. And the one thing I\u2019ve learned is that procrastinators never learn.<\/p>\n<p>For entrepreneurs, especially,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.shopify.com\/procrastination\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">procrastination<\/a>\u00a0can become a regular hurdle, making it necessary to take certain steps to ensure it doesn\u2019t stand in the way of you getting your idea off the ground.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But the first step on the road to recovery is to understand\u00a0<i>why<\/i>\u00a0it is we put things off.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Why Do We Procrastinate?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Contrary to popular belief, it\u2019s not necessarily because we\u2019re lazy.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.inc.com\/larry-kim\/3-types-of-procrastinators-amp-what-motivates-them-infographic.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">According to Joseph Ferrari<\/a>, a professor of psychology at DePaul University, there are three main breeds among procrastinators:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>The Thrill Seeker\u00a0<\/b>procrastinates to experience the last minute rush, like they\u2019ve just defused a bomb with only seconds to spare.<\/li>\n<li><b>The Avoider\u00a0<\/b>procrastinates because they\u2019re afraid of being judged, of the consequences of failure or, believe it or not, success.<\/li>\n<li><b>The Indecisive\u00a0<\/b>procrastinates as a byproduct of perfectionism, feeling it necessary to seize every second they have to do the best job they can.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Most of us probably fall into certain categories for different things.<\/p>\n<p>And every now and then we resolve to get organized, to do things in advance, but it\u2019s only a matter of time until we relapse. The only way to beat procrastination is to be conscious of it in our lives and to develop ways\u00a0to work around it.<\/p>\n<p>So, if you have the tendency to put things off and are looking for a way to change, here are some proven strategies you can adopt.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Create \u201cLast Minute Panic\u201d in the\u00a0Present<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>One of the reasons we procrastinate is to experience the thrill of racing against the\u00a0clock. Somehow we\u2019ve conditioned ourselves to think we do our best work during those final moments leading up to a deadline.<\/p>\n<p>These \u201cnear deadline experiences\u201d force us to make decisions that we would otherwise put off and to work at peak efficiency. Because, well, we have no other choice.<\/p>\n<p>One way to induce last minute panic months in advance is to\u00a0<b>set due dates well before your actual deadline<\/b>\u00a0to deceive yourself into completing tasks earlier.<\/p>\n<p>If false deadlines don\u2019t work, break your workload down into smaller tasks and set a timer as you attempt to finish each one.\u00a0<b>Racing against the clock is a good way to create pressure<\/b>\u00a0when there is none.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/chrome.google.com\/webstore\/category\/apps?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">1-Click Timer<\/a>\u00a0is a simple chrome extension that pits you against a timer\u00a0to get things done.<\/p>\n<p><strong><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"1-click timer\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0070\/7032\/files\/1-click_timer.png?1080334314104060233\" alt=\"1-click timer\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Any timer will work, but the point here is to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.shopify.com\/blog\/how-to-focus-better\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">help yourself stay focused<\/a>\u00a0on the task at hand and simulate the pressure of cutting it close. If something \u201cshould only take an hour\u201d, this is one way to\u00a0ensure it does.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Write Down Your Plans (Preferably in Pencil)<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Many procrastinators put things off because they like to keep their options open and let life (or a lack of time) force them into making decisions and finishing what they started.<\/p>\n<p>For procrastinators, calendars are poorly maintained\u00a0and To Do lists become To-Morrow lists. It\u2019s important for chronic procrastinators to organize themselves in a way that\u00a0<strong>accommodates flexibility, improvisation and the inevitable chaos of life<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>This is why I recommend\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/trello.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Trello<\/a>\u2014 it gives you full control over the way you manage tasks, your team, a project or an entire business venture.
