What&#8217;s yours? Mine takes me back to 2005. I reported to an executive in a mid-size hospital in Los Angeles. To this day,\u00a0Bruce is my favorite boss because of his\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/inc.com\/marcel-schwantes\/heres-a-top-10-list-of-the-worlds-best-ceos-but-they-lead-in-a-totally-unique-wa.html\">servant-leadership style<\/a>. For example:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>He didn&#8217;t get caught up in his positional power\u00a0power and made me feel like an equal.<\/li>\n<li>He was the most approachable boss I ever had, despite his executive status.<\/li>\n<li>He allowed me the freedom and autonomy to make\u00a0important decisions.<\/li>\n<li>He provided me with all the resources I needed to becoming a better leader.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>While\u00a0he was still &#8220;the boss,&#8221; I remember how much more satisfied and engaged I was than at any other time during my corporate career.<\/p>\n<p>What worked so well for Bruce and all his direct reports can be framed into one powerful paradox:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>He never led from the top-down;<\/li>\n<li>He shared\u00a0leadership\u00a0from the bottom-up.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Here are two\u00a0shared-leadership principles Bruce showed his team\u00a0daily as great examples you will find\u00a0in the best of leaders.<\/p>\n<h2>1. He facilitated a shared purpose that gave our work meaning.<\/h2>\n<p>Key word here is facilitate. Bruce\u00a0communicated an image of the future that drew us\u00a0in&#8211;that spoke\u00a0to what we were seeing and feeling.<\/p>\n<p>Bruce gave his team a destination: we knew where we were going.<\/p>\n<p>He gave us a purpose that answered the question, &#8220;Why do we do the work we do?&#8221; We knew what greater good we served that kept us focused on the end goal.<\/p>\n<p>He made sure we operated by shared values we all agreed on &#8212; the very principles that guided our decisions and actions on our daily journey to serve our purpose.<\/p>\n<p>With\u00a0these three components clearly defined for the whole team, a tremendous amount of energy, passion, and productivity was\u00a0unleashed.<\/p>\n<p>We had a higher level of commitment because we were\u00a0able to see the relationship between the direction of the organization and what we\u00a0personally believed in and cared deeply about. After all, this is what we signed up for when we joined the organization.<\/p>\n<p>As our leader, Bruce communicated an image of the future that spoke\u00a0to why we\u00a0were\u00a0doing the work, and how our work contributed\u00a0to the bigger picture.<\/p>\n<h2>2. He shared his power.<\/h2>\n<p>Because Bruce had a real relationship with us built on two-way trust,\u00a0 he was able to share his\u00a0power and release his positional\u00a0control by serving\u00a0the needs of his tribe first. It wasn&#8217;t about Bruce and, in turn, employee loyalty was off the charts.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of leveraging his\u00a0positional power for personal gain, self-promotion or demands for special privileges, Bruce\u00a0put his people in positions of leadership to stretch their growth and develop new strengths and roles for\u00a0them.<\/p>\n<p>Bruce modeled and fostered risk-taking, creativity and open communication for the whole team. By sharing his power and releasing\u00a0control, he\u00a0actually\u00a0<em>gained<\/em>\u00a0real power by pumping fear out of the room and removing obstacles in our path.
