In recent years it has also drawn a large number of travelers who believe that their vacations should be free so long as they make Instagram stories, according to several local business owners.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ygdjhk evys1bk0\">Last week, Gianluca Casaccia, 40, the manager and co-owner of the White Banana Beach Club, decided it was time to take action after opening his inbox and finding yet another message containing the phrase: \u201cI am an influencer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ygdjhk evys1bk0\">Since May, when Mr. Casaccia, who is Italian, and his wife, who is from Manila, opened their cocktail bar overlooking the turquoise Philippine Sea, they have received about 100 of these messages, he said.<\/p>\n<div class=\"css-1fanzo5 StoryBodyCompanionColumn\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-1ygdjhk evys1bk0\">Along with a bar, the venue has a restaurant and two \u201cluxury dorms\u201d for around $23 a bed. The typical email from a \u201cwannabe influencer\u201d is something like: \u201cI\u2019m coming from the 25th to the 27th. We need three beds and food and accommodation.\u201d In exchange, the traveler offers content instead of money.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ygdjhk evys1bk0\">\u201cWe found this disrespectful,\u201d he said in an\u00a0interview\u00a0Monday night. It didn\u2019t help that often the \u201cinfluencers\u201d had fewer than 2,000 Instagram followers. \u201cHow can you help me if you are no one?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ygdjhk evys1bk0\">And so on March 26 he posted the following on Facebook:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"css-1upla3o etf134l0\">\n<p class=\"css-1plcdrk evys1bk0\">We are receiving many messages regarding collaborations with influencers, Instagram influencers. We kindly would like to announce that White Banana is not interested to \u201ccollaborate\u201d with self-proclaimed \u201cinfluencers.\u201d And we would like to suggest to try another way to eat, drink, or sleep for free. Or try to actually work.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"css-1ygdjhk evys1bk0\">He was not aiming to go viral, he said. \u201cI just did it to make these people stop.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-o6xoe7\">\n<div class=\"css-cyc63m\">\n<div id=\"pp_edpick-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"ad pp_edpick-wrapper\">\n<div id=\"pp_edpick\" data-google-query-id=\"CMO26NWFw-ECFVcWGwodtaQBUw\">\n<div id=\"google_ads_iframe_\/29390238\/nyt\/world\/_7__container__\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"css-yp7nq2 eyr2lxc0\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"css-1fanzo5 StoryBodyCompanionColumn\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-1ygdjhk evys1bk0\">But within a week, Mr. Casaccia had racked up more than 11,000 likes, 3,000 shares and nearly 700 comments and had generated a feisty debate about the value of \u201cinfluence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ygdjhk evys1bk0\">Many applauded his attack on the overly entitled \u201cnew age beggars,\u201d as one commenter called them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ygdjhk evys1bk0\">But others defended the entrepreneurial travelers. What\u2019s wrong with trying to see what you can get? So asked Jovelyn Mateo, a travel blogger from Manila, on the White Banana Beach Club Facebook page. \u201cIf you know that you have something to offer on the table, it\u2019s never a bad thing to try,\u201d she wrote.<\/p>\n<div class=\"css-1fanzo5 StoryBodyCompanionColumn\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-1ygdjhk evys1bk0\">And didn\u2019t the island owe its popularity in part to breathtaking and well-curated Instagram photos? That\u2019s what\u00a0<a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/user\/lancedeocampo\/videos?shelf_id=1&amp;view=0&amp;sort=dd&amp;app=desktop\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lance De Ocampo<\/a>, a\u00a0Filipino\u00a0blogger and YouTuber,\u00a0asked his nearly 49,000 Instagram followers in a now-deleted post.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ygdjhk evys1bk0\">In response, Mr. Casaccia offered a clarification on his Facebook page: White Banana Beach Club was not against \u201creal influencers.\u201d He had even reached out to some of these in the past. (Asked to put a number on legitimate social influence, he put the number at half a million followers.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ygdjhk evys1bk0\">The people who bothered him were the \u201cwannabe freeloaders,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ygdjhk evys1bk0\">Some of his critics called that snobby and arbitrary and pointed out that he used his viral fame to point people to the club\u2019s Instagram account. But on the island, many praised Mr. Casaccia\u2019s stand. Davide Barbi, an artist who owns a villa on Siargao, recounted a recent evening that had been ruined by \u201cfreeloaders.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ygdjhk evys1bk0\">\u201cWe\u2019re basically a bunch of surfers, the alchemy with \u2018Instagrammers\u2019 was peculiar, to call it the least,\u201d he said in an email. \u201cAfter their few fairly embarrassing poses and related pics, they stated \u2018they love our place and how famous it could become with their media crowds checking it out.\u2019\u201d When it became clear that he was\u00a0not going to trade a stay in the villa for online photos, the travelers disappeared.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-o6xoe7\">\n<div class=\"css-2mg43r ehpkjz40\" data-testid=\"article-companion-wrapper\">\n<div id=\"newsletter-module\" class=\"css-rzld5f ehpkjz41\">\n<div class=\"css-tmqdvj ehpkjz42\">\n<div class=\"css-jj6290\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"css-tjpxhb\">\n<div class=\"css-11tp9ka\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"css-yp7nq2 eyr2lxc0\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"css-1fanzo5 StoryBodyCompanionColumn\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-1ygdjhk evys1bk0\">These tensions are certainly not new or unique to Siargao. In January 2018, the owner of a boutique lodge in Dublin got into a\u00a0<a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/life-style\/hotel-bans-influencers-instagram-social-media-stars-elle-darby-the-white-moose-cafe-a8166926.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">widely publicized fight<\/a>\u00a0with a young YouTuber who requested free lodging. In June of that year,\u00a0<a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/technology\/archive\/2018\/06\/instagram-influencers-are-driving-luxury-hotels-crazy\/562679\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Atlantic reported<\/a>\u00a0that resorts in the Maldives were swamped with influencer inquiries. But several people in the hotel industry say influencers have taken bartering to a whole new level lately.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ygdjhk evys1bk0\">\u201cThe number of requests are now so high that we don\u2019t even bother replying,\u201d said Jacques Maudy, who manages villas in Bali through the website\u00a0<a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/nomadholidayrentals.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">nomadholidayrentals.com<\/a>. \u201cWe even had the case a couple of weeks ago of a group of friends who secured one of our villas with a deposit and then tried to bargain the balance against a couple of posts.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-o6xoe7\"><\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"story-ad-3-wrapper\" class=\"css-1r07izm\">\n<div id=\"story-ad-3-slug\" class=\"css-l9onyx\">\n<p class=\"css-1ygdjhk evys1bk0\">The\u00a0<a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jashitahotel.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jashita Hotel<\/a>\u00a0in Tulum has faced such an overwhelming number of inquiries from \u201cinfluencers\u201d over the past six months that the hotel has stopped working with them, said Abigail Villamonte, the front desk manager.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ygdjhk evys1bk0\">\u201cYes we are annoyed \u2014 to be honest with you,\u201d she said. \u201cBecause they don\u2019t even write about it. They just post one picture.\u201d And that just leads to more requests from influencers, she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ygdjhk evys1bk0\">As for Mr. Casaccia, he said the messages slowed down for a few days after his Facebook post. But then they picked up again, though travelers are less demanding than before.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ygdjhk evys1bk0\">He said he even surprised himself by striking a conciliatory tone with one correspondent. \u201cI can see you have good content,\u201d he wrote. \u201cBut I suggest you do not introduce yourself as an
