Georgia ACLU plans to file a robust challenge to the law later this summer<\/p>\n

On Tuesday, after weeks of suspense-less delay, Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp signed a six week\u00a0abortion<\/a>\u00a0ban into law as he\u2019d long promised. The bill, slated to go into effect in January 2020, includes an incendiary provision declaring \u201cunborn children are a class of living, distinct person.\u201d The impact of those words, as laid out by\u00a0Mark Joseph Stern at\u00a0Slate<\/i><\/a>, is far-reaching: it would effectively criminalize \u2014 with penalties including life in prison and death \u2014 any woman who seeks an abortion or even one who miscarries in the state. That\u2019s a staggering thought, considering that one in four women will have an abortion before the age of 45.<\/p>\n

The implications are serious enough that the day Kemp signed the law,\u00a0Wire<\/em>\u00a0co-creator David Simon, who runs Blown Deadline Productions, declared on Twitter that his production company would not consider the state as a location for any upcoming projects.\u00a0\u201cI can\u2019t ask any female member of any film production with which I am involved to so marginalize themselves or compromise their inalienable authority over their own bodies. I must undertake production where the rights of all citizens remain intact,\u201d Simon tweeted.<\/p>\n

But, by and large,\u00a0the outrage over Georgia\u2019s law and the potential impact on women who live or work in the state has been surprisingly mute from the entertainment industry, which brought an estimated\u00a0$2.7 billion<\/a>\u00a0to the state in 2018 while filming some 455 productions there.<\/p>\n

The silence is particularly deafening from\u00a0Netflix<\/a>, which\u00a0is currently filming more projects in the state than any other company, according to the\u00a0Georgia Department of Economic Development<\/a>. While some of its marquee talent \u2014 including actress Alyssa Milano and producer Mark Duplass \u2014 have called for a boycott of the state, the streaming behemoth has not commented on the law. A Netflix representative directed\u00a0Rolling Stone<\/i>\u00a0to an anodyne statement from the MPAA, which said that it was \u201cmonitoring\u201d the situation in Georgia.<\/p>\n

\u201cFilm and television production in Georgia supports more than 92,000 jobs and brings significant economic benefits to communities and families. It is important\u00a0to remember that similar legislation has been attempted in other states, and has either been enjoined by the courts or currently being challenged,\u201d the MPAA said in a statement. \u201cThe outcome in Georgia will also be determined through the legal process. We will continue to monitor developments.\u201d<\/p>\n

The MPAA position, shared by Netflix, appears to hinge on the hope that the ACLU or another legal advocate will swoop in to contest the law before it goes into effect in January. It\u2019s not unreasonable to think that will in fact happen \u2014\u00a0the Georgia ACLU tells\u00a0Rolling Stone<\/i>\u00a0it plans to file a robust challenge to the law later this summer \u2014 but the MPAA and Netflix\u2019s unwillingness to stand up for the rights of their female employees in the meantime is noteworthy.<\/p>\n

Part of the reason the silence is so noteworthy is because such boycotts have proved successful in Georgia in the past. A similar threat was enough, back in 2016, to convince\u00a0then-Gov. Nathan Deal to veto a discriminatory \u201creligious freedom\u201d bill targeting gay and transgender people<\/a>\u00a0that was passed by the state legislature.<\/p>\n

Milano, one of the stars of the Netflix show Insatiable, was among the first to threaten an entertainment industry boycott of Georgia back\u00a0in March<\/a>. The actress has said she won\u2019t return to\u00a0Insatiable<\/em>\u00a0if it continues filming in the state. Duplass, whose production company Duplass Brothers Productions has a four-picture film deal with Netflix, tweeted a plea to join him in boycotting the state on Thursday. \u201cDon\u2019t give your business to Georgia. Will you pledge with me not to film anything in Georgia until they reverse this backwards legislation?\u201d Duplass asked.<\/p>\n

Other stars of Georgia-based Netflix productions, including Dolly Parton, whose musical,\u00a0Christmas on the Square<\/em>, is among the Netflix projects listed as currently filming in the state, and Emma Roberts, filming Netflix\u2019s\u00a0Holidate,<\/em>\u00a0did not respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n

Netflix, while one of the biggest industry presences in Georgia, is not alone in its silence. Oprah\u2019s OWN Network, whose shows\u00a0Ambitions<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Greenleaf<\/em>\u00a0are being filmed there, did not respond to a request for comment. A representative for Marvel,\u00a0which filmed\u00a0Black<\/i>\u00a0Panther<\/i>\u00a0and the latest\u00a0Avengers<\/i>\u00a0movie at Pinewood Studios in Atlanta, did not respond to a request for comment either.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
