\u2018Between 2,000 and 5,000 is the estimate\u2019<\/h2>\n

The Department of Defense isn\u2019t sure how many websites it runs.\u00a0Stars and Stripes<\/em>\u00a0reports<\/a>that at an event last month, US Army Colonel Paul Haverstick, the acting director of the Defense Media Activity at Fort Meade, Maryland said that the number of websites that the Pentagon runs is \u201cundefined.\u201d<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Defense Media Activity<\/a>\u00a0is the US military\u2019s multimedia outreach operation, covering the publication of official outlets, such as\u00a0Army News<\/em>,\u00a0Air Force News<\/em>,\u00a0Marines News<\/em>, and\u00a0Navy News<\/em>, and communications education for military and civilians. It also provides hosting and web development for the Department of Defense.<\/p>\n

But it seems that there\u2019s no official tally of all of the websites that it\u2019s responsible for. The DMA\u2019s website says that it supports \u201cover 740 military and DoD websites,\u201d but Haverstick says that he estimates that the DMA is responsible for \u201cbetween 2,000 and 5,000\u201d websites. Those websites include the major sites for the various military branches, all the way down to blogs and sites for individual units. The service doesn\u2019t manage everything for the Department of Defense \u2014 some websites are hosted on public sites.<\/p>\n

Stars and Stripes<\/em>\u00a0notes that the DMA has faced budget cuts along with the rest of the Pentagon in recent years, and that the \u201cagency is looking to focus its mission and may seek to offload responsibility for DOD\u2019s public website infrastructure.\u201d In order to do that, it will have to take stock of what it is responsible for in order to properly assess how to move forward.<\/p>\n
