{"id":1919,"date":"2019-06-11T13:46:59","date_gmt":"2019-06-11T11:46:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.dazzlepop.net\/site\/?p=1919"},"modified":"2019-05-29T13:49:41","modified_gmt":"2019-05-29T11:49:41","slug":"facebook-warns-advertisers-clear-history-tool-may-impact-ad-targeting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dazzlepop.net\/site\/facebook-warns-advertisers-clear-history-tool-may-impact-ad-targeting\/","title":{"rendered":"Facebook warns advertisers \u2018Clear History\u2019 tool may impact ad targeting"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"text-align:center\"><\/div>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The transparency tool designed to give users more control over their data will be rolling out in the coming months.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Facebook released an&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/business\/news\/what-businesses-should-know-about-the-upcoming-tool-for-managing-off-facebook-activity\">announcement<\/a>&nbsp;Tuesday letting advertisers know that its coming \u201cClear History\u201d tool \u2014 a feature that will allow users to disconnect their off-Facebook activity from their profile \u2014 may impact ad targeting, but will not affect any measurement or analytics tools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s important to understand that advertising and protecting people\u2019s information are not at odds,\u201d writes Facebook on its Business blog post, \u201cWe can do both.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How the \u201cClear History\u201d tool will work.<\/strong>&nbsp;Facebook\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/marketingland.com\/mark-zuckerberg-announces-new-clear-history-option-more-at-facebooks-f8-conference-239346\">Clear History tool was first announced<\/a>&nbsp;during last year\u2019s F8 Conference when CEO Mark Zuckerberg said his team was working on a tool that would let&nbsp;users clear their browsing history on the platform and see all the apps they had interacted with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The company&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.fb.com\/news\/2018\/05\/clear-history-2\/\">clarified<\/a>&nbsp;the feature doesn\u2019t actually delete a user\u2019s browsing activity or off-line actions, but makes the data anonymous: \u201cIf you clear your history or use the new setting, we\u2019ll remove identifying information so a history of the websites and apps you\u2019ve used won\u2019t be associated with your account. We\u2019ll still provide apps and websites with aggregated analytics.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Clear History feature is designed to deliver more transparency for users, showing them a list of the apps and websites they have visited that employ Facebook business tools like the Facebook Pixel, SDK and API.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Facebook reports it will be rolling out the new tool in the coming months, more than a year since it was first announced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Implications for ad targeting.<\/strong>&nbsp;Facebook said that once the tool is live, and users are able to disconnect their off-Facebook activity from their profile, the company will no longer be able to use that data for ad targeting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis means that targeting options powered by Facebook\u2019s business tools, like the Facebook pixel, can\u2019t be used to reach someone with ads. This includes Custom Audiences built from visitors to websites or apps,\u201d writes Facebook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The company&nbsp; recommends advertisers take this under consideration when planning their strategies for the second half of the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Measurement and analytics reports.<\/strong>&nbsp;Facebook says it doesn\u2019t anticipate any changes to measurement and analytics reports once the Clear History tool has launched. Because the company is not deleting off-platform activity by users \u2014 only making it anonymous \u2014 that data will still be available for measurement reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe will still be able to provide accurate measurement to help businesses understand the impact of their Facebook investment, while honoring people\u2019s choice to exercise control over their off-Facebook activity,\u201d writes Facebook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Why we should care.<\/strong>&nbsp;Facebook has long been a goldmine for ad targeting, but at what cost to user privacy and data security? The Clear History tool addresses a critical issue that has been at the core of Facebook\u2019s ongoing crisis over how it handles user data. The company stresses that a \u201cbig component\u201d of the new tool is giving users more transparency into how their data is used and insight into how advertisers use Facebook\u2019s business tools. It also makes the argument that informing people about how their information is being used will only improve how consumers feel about the ads they see.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our industry is seeing the initial glimpses of a whole new Facebook \u2014\u00a0 one focused on privacy and one-on-one messaging versus public social feeds. For advertisers, this means ad targeting options are likely to become more limited.
