Apple Inc.<\/a> accused upstart Corellium LLC of illegally selling virtual copies of the iPhone and iPad operating systems under the guise of helping discover security flaws.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a copyright-infringement lawsuit filed Thursday in West Palm Beach, Florida, Apple said the software company Corellium has copied the operating system, graphical user interface and other aspects of the devices without permission, and wants a federal judge to stop the violations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Apple said it supports \u201cgood-faith security research,\u201d offering a $1 million \u201cbug bounty\u201d for anyone who discovers flaws in its system and gives custom versions of the iPhone to \u201clegitimate\u201d researchers. Corellium, the iPhone maker said, goes further than that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAlthough Corellium paints itself as providing a research tool for those trying to discover security vulnerabilities and other flaws in Apple\u2019s software, Corellium\u2019s true goal is profiting off its blatant infringement,\u201d Apple said in the complaint. \u201cFar from assisting in fixing vulnerabilities, Corellium encourages its users to sell any discovered information on the open market to the highest bidder.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Corellium creates copies of the Apple iOS, and says that it\u2019s all to help white-hat hackers discover security flaws. Instead, according to Apple, any information is sold to people who can then exploit those flaws.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Corellium, in a posting<\/a> dated July 4 on its website, said it \u201crespects the intellectual property rights of others and expects its users to do the same.\u201d Officials with the Delray Beach, Florida-based company couldn\u2019t immediately be reached for comment on the suit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Corellium\u2019s products allow the creation of a virtual Apple device, according to the suit. It copies new versions of Apple works as soon as they are announced, and doesn\u2019t require users to disclose flaws to Apple, the Cupertino, California-based company said in the complaint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFor a million dollars a year, Corellium will even deliver a \u2018private\u2019 installation of its product to any buyer,\u201d Apple said. \u201cThere is no basis for Corellium to be selling a product that allows the creation of avowedly perfect replicas of Apple\u2019s devices to anyone willing to pay.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Apple said \u201cenough is enough\u201d when it comes to Corellium advertising its products, including ones that compete with the Apple Developer Program, according to the complaint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCorellium is indiscriminately marketing the Corellium Apple Product to any customer, including foreign governments and commercial enterprises,\u201d Apple said. \u201cCorellium is not selectively limiting its customers to only those with some socially beneficial purpose.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to an order blocking sales of the Corellium Apple Product, Apple wants a court order forcing Corellium to notify its customers that they are in violation of Apple\u2019s rights, destruction of any products using Apple copyrights, and cash compensation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The case is Apple Inc. v. Corellium LLC, 19-81160, U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida (West Palm Beach).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
