That\u2019s why many of them turn to analytics \u2014 but Bilal Mahmood, co-founder and CEO of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/clearbrain.com\/\">ClearBrain<\/a>, said existing analytics platforms can\u2019t answer that question accurately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEvery analytics platform today is still based on a fundamental correlation model,\u201d Mahmood said. It\u2019s the classic&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Correlation_does_not_imply_causation\">correlation-versus-causation problem<\/a>&nbsp;\u2014 you can use the data to suggest that an action and a result are related, but you can\u2019t draw a direct cause-and-effect relationship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s the problem that&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/crunchbase.com\/organization\/clearbrain\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ClearBrain&nbsp;<strong><\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;is trying to solve with its new \u201ccausal analytics\u201d tool. As the company put it in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.clearbrain.com\/posts\/introducing-causal-analytics\">a blog post<\/a>, \u201cOur goal was to automate this process [of running statistical studies] and build the first large-scale causal inference engine to allow growth teams to measure the causal effect of every action.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can read the post for (many) more details, but the gist is that Mahmood and his team claim they can draw accurate causal relationships where others can\u2019t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Screen-Shot-2019-08-12-at-3.28.48-PM.png?w=680\" alt=\"ClearBrain analytics screenshot\" class=\"wp-image-1869934\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The idea is to use this in conjunction with A\/B testing \u2014 customers look at the data to prioritize what to test next, and to make estimates about the impact of things that can\u2019t be tested. Otherwise, Mahmood said, \u201cIf you wanted to measure the actual impact of every variable on your website and your app \u2014 the actual impact it has on conversation \u2014 it could take you years.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2018\/02\/07\/clearbrain-launch\/\">I wrote about ClearBrain last year<\/a>, it was using artificial intelligence to improve ad targeting, but Mahmood said the company built the new analytics technology in response to customer demand: \u201cPeople didn\u2019t just want to know who was going to convert, they wanted to know why, and what caused them to do so.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The causal analytics tool is currently available to early access users, with plans for a full launch in October.
