He still appreciates Apple, though<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak is wildly outspoken, and he\u2019s never<\/a> been<\/a> shy<\/a> to criticize the company he helped build. This week, he told Bloomberg<\/em><\/a>that Apple should have been broken up a long time ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He\u2019s not necessarily talking about government regulators stepping in the way Elizabeth Warren wants<\/a>, though. Rather, he seems to be talking about building an environment where engineers like himself are free to work on their own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here\u2019s the full quote: \u201cI wish Apple on its own has split off a long time ago and spun off independent divisions to far away places and let them work independently, like Hewlett Packard did when I was there.\u201dAPPLE SEEMS TO BE DOING PRETTY WELL AS A MONOLITHIC ENTITY, THOUGH<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You might note that HP was the company that turned down<\/em> Wozniak when he wanted to make a personal computer \u2014 five times, according to Woz<\/a> \u2014 and that HP as a company isn\u2019t anywhere near the wildly successful juggernaut<\/a> that Apple is today. But Woz has also praised HP in the past for letting him work freely. \u201cEngineers could go in at night and have access to all the parts they needed and tools to work on their own designs,\u201d he recalled in 2011.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI think big tech has gotten too big, it\u2019s too powerful a force in our life, and it\u2019s taken our choices away. It\u2019s hard to escape,\u201d Woz told Bloomberg<\/em>, but added that he thinks Apple is \u201cthe best of the companies\u201d because it\u2019s mostly making money selling products rather than tracking people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He thinks that when it comes to Facebook and Google, competition should be enforced \u2014 but in the meanwhile, he has an ask: \u201cGive me a choice to pay for almost no tracking.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
