Wondering how to keep the conversation going with your followers?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this article, you\u2019ll discover how to get your audience to engage with your social media posts, videos, and live videos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The 3 Rules of Social Media Engagement<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Before jumping into the tips, let\u2019s make sure you\u2019ve got the right baseline. There are three rules of engagement you must follow. Without this foundation, nothing else will work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Be Consistent<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.socialmediaexaminer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/social-media-engagement-promote-live-video-350.png\" alt=\"ALT\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>I know, I know\u2026 You\u2019ve heard it before. And that\u2019s because it\u2019s true. You must consistently create quality social media content for people to want to engage with you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s a trust thing. Why would they show up for you if you\u2019re not showing up for them? It\u2019s also a habit thing. Creating a habit with your audience is the key to success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you and your friends make plans to have dinner \u201csometime this week,\u201d what are the chances you\u2019ll all show up at the same day and time? Very slim, right? This is why there\u2019s a defined day, time, and place when we make plans in real life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The same must be true of your content. You\u2019re making plans with a group of people. They\u2019ll put it on their schedule and their calendar to show up Monday at 8 AM if (and only if) you\u2019re consistently showing up at that time, too!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ask Specific Questions<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Too often, marketers think they\u2019re asking for engagement when, in fact, they\u2019re not. If you\u2019re not getting super-specific with your request for people to comment, chances are they won\u2019t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you say something like, \u201cLet me know what you think about that,\u201d it\u2019s not going to drive a lot of action. Instead, you want to say, \u201cDo you think I\u2019m right or wrong about this? Leave a comment right now and tell me\u2014let\u2019s discuss it!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>People are busy and distracted. Yes, they\u2019re probably multitasking while watching your video or reading your post. So be sure to take their distraction into account and give them specific instructions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.socialmediaexaminer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/social-media-engagement-ask-question-example-800.png\" alt=\"ALT\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Include an Element of Fun<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s time to kill the professional attitude. I\u2019m all for a professional look (quality matters), but never a professional attitude. Avoid the stiff, old-school business way of talking and being. That\u2019s so 1970.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What works today is personality. A sense of fun and your unique personality is what will drive engagement more than anything else because people don\u2019t engage unless they enjoy the content or feel something about it. Learning is good. Having fun while learning is even better!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.socialmediaexaminer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/social-media-engagement-humor-example-1-550.png\" alt=\"ALT\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">6 Tips for Social Media Engagement<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Okay, now that we\u2019ve got the foundation down, let\u2019s move on to ways you can increase your engagement even more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">#1: Create a Club-Like Experience<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The intrigue of a club is the exclusivity factor, right? Well, your community should feel like a club. When people feel special, they\u2019re more likely to show up and engage. Make people feel like they\u2019re a part of something bigger than themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One way you can do this is to name your audience. Jill and Josh Stanton at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/SayNoToNinetoFive\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Screw the Nine to Five<\/a>do a fantastic job with this. Their community is called Scroupies (Groupies of The Screw). Jill will refer to Scroupies in her content, as you can see in the post below. The community will refer to themselves as Scroupies. And it lends itself to more conversation because they have an identity\u2026 and those who aren\u2019t a part of the insider club yet feel the need to join in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another way you can create a club-like experience is by repeating themes throughout your content. I often use the phrase \u201cYOUniquely You\u201d in my content. It\u2019s a recurring theme I use to help people integrate their unique personality into their content and stop being afraid of being fully authentic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What happens is people identify with a theme, so over time, you don\u2019t have to say anything\u2014people will bring the theme up themselves in comments. They\u2019ll educate new viewers. They\u2019ll use the theme conversationally. See how having an insider club experience will get you more natural engagement?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.socialmediaexaminer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/social-media-engagement-insider-example-550.png\" alt=\"ALT\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">#2: Encourage Conversation With Audience Triggers<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To get the kind of engagement that comes on its own (in other words, you don\u2019t have to work so hard for it), you want to tap into audience triggers. These audience triggers have nothing to do with pain points, as you might be thinking. They also have zero to do with the topic of your content or your primary value.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Triggers tap into personal likes\/dislikes of your audience. They turn valuable, educational content into a conversation piece.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s look at some examples of audience triggers you can use in your social media marketing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Feature Pets in Your Social Media Content<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Everyone loves dogs or cats, right? Same for babies. They trigger an \u201cawwww\u201d response from your audience. It has nothing to do with your content (unless you\u2019re a dog trainer), but it will get people to say something!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/wirecutter\/status\/1151292411018190850?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Wirecutter tweet<\/a>&nbsp;featuring a \u201cterrible deal\u201d on a small black cowboy hat for pets generated a ton of engagement. In fact, some users not only opted to purchase the hat but also posted pics on Twitter of their pet wearing it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.socialmediaexaminer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/social-media-engagement-pets-example-550.png\" alt=\"ALT\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re struggling to get engagement, bring your dog on screen and ask your audience what pets they have. Ask for pics. People love to talk about their pets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As you take it deeper, your pet can become a vital part of your audience conversation. Abbey the Chihuahua, my dog, is a staple. People know everything about her, from how she came into our lives to the fact that she can\u2019t walk on hardwood floors so I\u2019ve laid out rubber flooring throughout my house. They ask about her when she\u2019s not on camera.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They even ask for an \u201cAbbey Cam\u201d to watch her sleep! She\u2019s not the reason they started watching my videos, but she certainly helps engagement because she\u2019s a personal touchpoint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Use Visual Themes in Your Social Media Content<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Every Tuesday the theme around our content is \u201cTaco Tuesday.\u201d We have bots set up in our live streams so people can earn \u201ctacos\u201d (a non-monetary currency) just for watching us. The more they watch, the more tacos they earn. People are always talking about the number of tacos they have, and they compete against each other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We use tacos as visual aids anywhere we can. One type of stream we do is called IRL \u201cIn Real Life,\u201d where my partner, David, and I&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.socialmediaexaminer.com\/twitch-what-marketers-need-to-know-luria-petrucci\/\">live-stream on Twitch<\/a>&nbsp;for hours on end sharing our daily life and taking our audience on adventures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Well, we\u2019re a couple. And sometimes couples argue (or really bicker), right? We don\u2019t hold back on streams!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our audience has taken to identifying the location of the argument or what we\u2019re arguing about. If we\u2019re in the car, they call the arguments \u201ccarguments.\u201d If we\u2019re arguing about caffeinated vs. decaf coffee, they\u2019ll type \u201ccoffeeguments\u201d in the chatroom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The thing is, when your audience starts to get \u201ctriggered\u201d and you notice their reaction to something you said or did, it\u2019s up to you to tap into it. A one-time reaction can become a recurring trigger and theme that leads to massive engagement, but only if you respond to it encouragingly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">#3: Use Emotional Cues<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>People\u2014human beings\u2014operate on emotion. When we feel, we act. Consider why&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.socialmediaexaminer.com\/narrative-storytelling-how-to-weave-stories-marketing-melissa-cassera\/\">storytelling<\/a>&nbsp;is the oldest form of communication. Consider why charities will show you heartbreaking imagery&nbsp;<em>before<\/em>&nbsp;asking you to donate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At its core, engagement is all about emotion. Nothing will happen\u2026 you\u2019ll get no engagement\u2026 without getting emotional.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.socialmediaexaminer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/social-media-engagement-storytelling-800.png\" alt=\"ALT\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Now I don\u2019t mean that you have to tap into your inner Barbara Walters and make people cry. It can be a simple thing. Make them laugh. Talk about something that angers them. Tell a sad story. Whatever you do, make them feel something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.socialmediaexaminer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/social-media-engagement-humor-example-2-550.png\" alt=\"ALT\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">#4: Gamify the Conversation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Gamification is an incredibly easy, fun way to exponentially increase engagement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A woman once asked me what to do in a situation where she was super-frustrated. She was doing videos and going live on social media, but there was a ton of noise all the time outside her window and door. She lives in San Francisco and they often use her apartment building for shooting movies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One day, she said they were chopping up a couch with a chainsaw right outside her door. She was beside herself, feeling like she was coming across as so unprofessional. I saw the perfect gamification situation!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I suggested she play it up. When it happens, ask the audience, \u201cOkay, what do you think it is this time, a fire truck or a couch being cut in half?\u201d The first person to get it right wins! She turned the answers into a bingo card for her audience. How fun is that?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.socialmediaexaminer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/social-media-engagement-bingo-card-example-600.png\" alt=\"ALT\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>You can play trivia with your audience and use the content topics as answers. You can have the audience guess the answers to what you\u2019re talking about. There are lots of ways to gamify a video so you\u2019re asking for engagement in a situation that people want to take part in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">#5: Invite Sharing of Expertise<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.socialmediaexaminer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/social-media-engagement-audience-expertise-example-350.png\" alt=\"ALT\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The ideal scenario for&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.socialmediaexaminer.com\/how-to-develop-thriving-community-cate-stillman\/\">an engaged community<\/a>&nbsp;is where people talk to each other, not just to you. Encourage people to talk among themselves\u2026 meet someone from the same city or talk about a common interest, for instance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The more that conversations create connections among your audience, the more engagement you\u2019ll get, and the more loyalty you\u2019ll have because you\u2019re now a connector!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You have a ton of smart people in your audience. You\u2019re not the only knowledgeable one. So invite people to share their own knowledge, thoughts, and opinions in your content in addition to what you\u2019re saying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>People love this because they feel like you actually care and aren\u2019t self-serving. Asking people to comment, not just about what you said but inviting them to share their expertise, will get you more comments, engagement, and loyalty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">#6: Don\u2019t End the Conversation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the biggest mistakes people make when it comes to getting engagement is they stop a potential conversation before it gets started. When someone comments on your content saying, \u201cGreat video!\u201d or \u201cGreat article!\u201d, what do you tend to say?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThank you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But, what if instead you say, \u201cThank you! What was your biggest takeaway?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead of cutting the conversation off, you\u2019re now encouraging conversation. You\u2019re engaging with people so they\u2019ll be more likely to engage with you in the future because they feel like you actually care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bonus Tip for Live Video Engagement<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This bonus tip works primarily for&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.socialmediaexaminer.com\/how-to-use-live-video-to-generate-leads-and-sell\/\">live video<\/a>. After all, it\u2019s the most engaging form of social media marketing content you can create.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you go live, you\u2019re likely to have new viewers every stream so ask them to identify themselves. All you have to say is, \u201cIf you\u2019re new, let me know in the comments!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.socialmediaexaminer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/social-media-engagement-live-video-example-2-800.png\" alt=\"ALT\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>When they say they\u2019re new, spend a moment saying hi specifically to them! Learn something about them, like where they\u2019re from, for example. Then have a quick conversation (\u201cOh, I\u2019ve always wanted to go to Italy!\u201d). Ask a question about them. Make them feel like you care about them as a person, not just another viewer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When they return next time, recall what you learned. \u201cWelcome back, Sarah! If I remember correctly, you\u2019re from Italy, right?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By the way, it\u2019s okay to get it wrong! If you mess it up, they\u2019ll at least appreciate that you tried.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It might feel a bit overwhelming to think about remembering everyone\u2019s details so just do it with one person next time you go live. Write down the name of the person and their city. Keep it by your computer for the next time you go live.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then try it with another person. And then another. Soon, you\u2019ll realize it\u2019s not that hard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The more you try to make people feel special, the more engagement you\u2019ll get. Not to mention you\u2019ll create loyal viewers who will want to participate in everything you do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Conclusion<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>We know that social media platforms require engagement to get traction from the algorithm (heck, Facebook has been very outspoken about this!).
