That&#8217;s resulted in a raft of major &#8216;purges&#8217; which have seen many high profile users, in particular, suffer declines in their follower counts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>In 2014, Instagram&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2014\/dec\/19\/instagram-purge-costs-celebrities-millions-of-followers\">removed millions of spam bot accounts<\/a>, which saw celebrities like Justin Bieber and Akon lose millions of followers overnight<\/li><li>In 2017, Facebook&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/facebook-purges-fake-accounts-publishers\/\">cleaned out a heap of fake profiles<\/a>, which resulted in many Pages losing a significant percentage of their overall Likes<\/li><li>In 2018, Twitter&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/07\/12\/technology\/twitter-followers-nyt.html\">removed millions of bot accounts<\/a>, again seeing celebrities like Ashton Kutcher suffer major follower losses<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These are in addition to the ongoing efforts by each platform to detect and remove fakes at the inception stage, and expanded pushes to cut politically motivated actors. It&#8217;s become a major area of concern &#8211; to provide some additional context on the size of such efforts, the team from&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.digitalinformationworld.com\/\">Digital Information World<\/a>&nbsp;have put together this&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.digitalinformationworld.com\/2019\/09\/influencer-marketing-maturation.html\">listing<\/a>&nbsp;of the most significant purges in recent times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Social Platforms are Working Harder to Remove Fakes [Infographic]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Spam bots and fake profiles remain a problem, but as you can see here, major
