The last thing you want to do is learn how to manage a crisis in the middle of one.\u00a0GETTY<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Good crisis management is all about companies dealing with problems the right way. Most don\u2019t. Every day you see another business blow-up. WeWork\u2019s problems grew, its value tanked, and the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/sergeiklebnikov\/2019\/09\/30\/weworks-new-leadership-officially-cancels-ipo-plans\/#889012665c5e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">IPO was cancelled<\/a>\u2014after excusing the CEO from any further duties (does that make it \u201cMostOfUsWork\u201d?). Vapers are being stricken with a mysterious lung illness and in the wake of this health crisis,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/isabeltogoh\/2019\/09\/25\/juul-ceo-kevin-burns-steps-down-suspends-advertising-amid-vaping-crisis\/#1944b324b7ed\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Juuls\u2019 CEO departs and its prospects plunge<\/a>. Then there is the opioid epidemic which has, deservedly or not, pummeled numerous companies, but especially Purdue Pharma\u2014maker of OxyContin\u2014which&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/isabeltogoh\/2019\/09\/16\/oxycontin-maker-purdue-pharma-files-for-bankruptcy-over-opioid-settlement\/#3e3a56be6196\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">just entered bankruptcy<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Crises abound. Good crisis management does not. Plan for the worst. The last thing you want to do is learn how to manage a crisis in the middle of one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Planning For The Worst<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>People struggle with crisis planning. You get extremes. There\u2019s the prepper with a 20-year supply of tinned sardines in his basement\u2014which means you\u2019ve created a plan where the prize for \u201csurviving\u201d is a banquet of 20-year-old sardines. Ewww. At the other extreme, you see the opioid industrial complex. They\u2019ve haltingly stumbled into reaction mode as the health crisis and lawsuits grew\u2014a game plan which the vaping industry is avidly copying. Meanwhile, attorneys general and a volt of lawyers circle overhead.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/specials-images.forbesimg.com\/imageserve\/185539304\/960x0.jpg?fit=scale\" alt=\"The Right Plan OF Crisis Management\" \/><figcaption>The Right Plan OF Crisis Management<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>You get extremes with crisis planning. It\u2019s easy to hide. But each extreme is costly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For you youngsters, Johnson &amp; Johnson was once THE Jedi Master of crisis management (notwithstanding the recent<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.law.com\/njlawjournal\/2019\/09\/11\/johnson-johnson-hit-with-37-3m-talc-verdict-in-new-jersey\/?slreturn=20190901150553\" target=\"_blank\">&nbsp;talcum powder&nbsp;<\/a>and&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/investigations\/johnson-and-johnson-reaches-tentative-204-million-settlement-in-massive-opioid-case\/2019\/10\/01\/6a8a9670-e48e-11e9-b403-f738899982d2_story.html\" target=\"_blank\">opioid<\/a>&nbsp;lawsuits against J&amp;J).&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/3423136\/tylenol-deaths-1982\/\" target=\"_blank\">In 1982<\/a>, seven people died in the Chicago area from Tylenol laced with potassium cyanide. J&amp;J did not collapse into a defensive crouch or come out attacking.&nbsp;Instead, the company wisely and bravely took on the storm. J&amp;J rapidly publicized warnings, pulled all of its Tylenol pills from shelves\u2014regardless of evidence of tampering\u2014and offered refunds.&nbsp;Next J&amp;J suspended all Tylenol sales until the company was able to sell them in then-revolutionary tamper resistant bottles.
