It is a difficult task to change people\u2019s hearts and minds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a woman of color, I can&#8217;t help but think about&nbsp;questions I have been asked when I am the only or one of few person(s) of color among colleagues:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cHow did you get an invitation to that event? Maybe we\u2019ll find out you are more important than we thought.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was an exclusive event that was invite-only.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cWhat are you doing here?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I was asked in a degrading tone when I saw a senior leader of a company of a previous employer at a paid event. I was sitting in the same tier of paid seats as she had.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cDon\u2019t you feel uncomfortable at this conference, being the only black person?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I was asked by a woman at a digital marketing conference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/ellevate-app-uploads-production\/blog_posts\/10312\/featured_image\/large\/photo-1565125172006-f26a2d3c8597.jpeg?1570569844\" alt=\"Reducing Racism and Unconscious Bias\" \/><figcaption>Reducing Racism and Unconscious Bias<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Hearing these questions posed to me, I was suddenly eight years old again, standing next to my parents in the lobby of a symphony orchestra hall before the concert began. We were one of the only diverse families at the concert. Before entering to take our seats, a couple walked up to our family and sneered, \u201cWho gave you tickets?\u201d In those days, people of color were not expected to attend the symphony &#8211; or to have purchased season tickets, as we had done &#8211; and were not often welcomed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fast-forward thirty years, and I am being asked these similar types of questions in workplace settings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What prompts these questions: racism or unconscious bias?<\/strong> Reducing Racism and Unconscious Bias<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Unconscious bias is defined as \u201clearned&nbsp;social stereotypes that are automatic, unintentional, deeply engrained, universal, and able to influence behavior,\u201d&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/10.1177\/0950017017719841\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according to researcher Mike Noon<\/a>&nbsp;at Queen Mary, University of London.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/us\/blog\/theory-knowledge\/201809\/racism-two-very-different-meanings-the-word\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2017 article in&nbsp;<em>Psychology Today<\/em><\/a>&nbsp;provides two distinct definitions of racism:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The traditional meaning of the term refers to explicit beliefs (or messages or policies or actions) about the value and place of the various races, with a particular emphasis on the idea that some races are inherently superior when compared to others.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The other definition of racism [progressive], refers to the implicit and institutional structures that can bias the flow of power, influence, and resources towards some races and away from others.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unconscious bias and racism both&nbsp;have negative effects on workplace relationships and career growth for women of color. Many of us have to deal with disparaging questions and remarks, making us feel excluded&nbsp;because of our diversity.&nbsp;These situations of isolation and being questioned about our status, value, or presence in professional settings have been ongoing for decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Are diversity and inclusion efforts truly working, or will they ever work?&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.prdaily.com\/why-diversity-and-inclusion-programs-are-failing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Ragan\u2019s PR Daily<\/em><\/a>&nbsp;published an article in 2019 stating:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Many diversity and inclusion programs are failing\u2026 three-fourths of underrepresented groups (women, racial and ethnic minorities, and LGBTQ+ employees, for example) report feeling no personal benefit from diversity and inclusion programs.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For more Business Articles: <a
