Aside from&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2019\/05\/23\/self-made-millionaire-investor-dont-make-the-huge-homebuying-mistake-i-made.html\" class=\"\">buying a home<\/a>, a car is probably the second-most expensive purchase you will ever make in your life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After more than 10 years of writing about money on my personal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazzlepop.net\/site\/category\/business\/\">finance website<\/a>,\u00a0<a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.financialsamurai.com\/\">Financial Samurai<\/a>, I\u2019ve found that being too fixated on the advertised price of a car is the biggest \u2014 and most expensive \u2014 mistake buyers make.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Too often, people will purchase a car without having a realistic understanding of how much&nbsp;<em>more<\/em>&nbsp;it will actually cost to own it. As a result, they end up spending too much and exceeding their budget.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Never spend more than this much of your income on a car<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To save others from making this costly mistake, I came up with the 1\/10th rule for buying a car. It\u2019s simple: Spend no more than 10% of your gross annual income on the purchase price of a car.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why? Because the upfront cost of a vehicle isn\u2019t going to be the only thing you pay for, and cutting down your base price budget is the most effective way to save money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you make the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.financialsamurai.com\/the-average-household-income-in-america\/\" class=\"\">median per capita income of about $42,000 a year<\/a>, for example, you should limit your budget to $4,200. If you make the median household income of about $62,000 a year, don\u2019t spend more than $6,200 on a car.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why you may regret not following the 1\/10th rule<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>According to a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aiada.org\/news\/first-up\/auto-loans-hit-record-high-sending-borrowers-the-best-credit-the-used-market\" class=\"\">2019 report from Experian<\/a>, which tracks millions of auto loans each month, the average amount borrowed to buy a new vehicle hit a record $32,187 in the first quarter. The average used-vehicle loan also hit a record, $20,137. That\u2019s far more than what most American households can afford.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even so, Experian found that&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2019\/01\/03\/car-payments-and-loans-jump-amid-surging-demand-for-cars-suvs.html\" class=\"\">20% of borrowers<\/a>&nbsp;are taking out loans of $50,000 or more. That means, median income earners who buy&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.financialsamurai.com\/average-new-car-price\/\" class=\"\">median-priced cars<\/a>&nbsp;are essentially spending almost 80% of their gross salary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Worst of all, after they pay a 20% effective tax rate on their annual gross income, they\u2019ll be spending almost 100% of their net income on the car!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are a few other major (though rarely considered) reasons why spending more than 10% of your annual income on a car is a horrible idea:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1. Maintenance (and other hidden) costs will eat up your savings.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The more you drive your car, the more expensive it will cost to maintain it. With thousands of parts to each vehicle, something will inevitably break, leak or need upgrading, especially after the warranty runs out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And it\u2019s not just maintenance costs: You\u2019ll also have to pay for things like gas, interest on financing,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.financialsamurai.com\/tips-and-tricks-to-getting-auto-insurance-discounts\/\" class=\"\">insurance<\/a>, parking and traffic tickets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Furthermore, the thrill of owning a new or \u201cnew-ish\u201d used car lasts for only several months, but the pain of paying the same car payment will last for years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/fm-static.cnbc.com\/awsmedia\/chart\/2019\/10\/14\/FS%20-%20Depreciation%20of%20a%20$30K%20vehicle.1571083169098.png\" alt=\"Never spend more than this much of your income on a car\" \/><figcaption> <em>(Source:&nbsp;<\/em><a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.edmunds.com\/car-buying\/drive-a-nearly-new-car-for-almost-free.html\"><em>Edmunds<\/em><\/a><em>)<\/em> <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Read more:  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2019\/11\/04\/follow-this-simple-rule-for-car-buying-if-you-want-to-get-rich-says-millionaire-money-expert.html\">https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2019\/11\/04\/follow-this-simple-rule-for-car-buying-if-you-want-to-get-rich-says-millionaire-money-expert.html<\/a> <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Never spend more than this much of your income on a car.
