It makes one every year featuring its most popular content creators and its most-watched videos. The videos are usually produced in a hokey way with a poorly written script that\u2019s barely strung together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Every year, the video gets brutally trolled. In&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=FlsCjmMhFmw\" target=\"_blank\">2017<\/a>, it featured \u201cDespacito,\u201d the \u201cFloor Is Lava challenge,\u201d and Logan Paul right before his \u201csuicide forest\u201d debacle (yikes). That video was downvoted 2.2 million times.&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/YbJOTdZBX1g?t=4\" target=\"_blank\">Last year<\/a>, it featured Cardi B, BTS, and ASMR. That one got downvoted a whopping 17 million times (compared to just 2.7 million thumbs-ups).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This year, YouTube acknowledged how much its annual videos are hated, and tried to put one out that was unlike any of the ones from years prior.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn 2018 we made something you didn\u2019t like. So in 2019, let\u2019s see what you DID like,\u201d read an opening title card. The video then jumps into a top 10 slideshow of the most-liked content on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazzlepop.net\/site\/category\/technology\/\">platform<\/a> this year. And that\u2019s it. That\u2019s the whole year-end video.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My coworker Lauren Strapagiel called it essentially a&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/user\/WatchMojo\" target=\"_blank\">WatchMojo slideshow<\/a>, and I couldn\u2019t agree more. And, in online poetic justice, this year\u2019s more self-aware attempt is already being massively downvoted. (There are 7.2 million thumbs-downs versus 2.9 million thumbs-ups so far.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s also making everyone \u2014 including me \u2014 strangely nostalgic for the good old days. I miss the bad stuff. People miss the bad stuff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/img.buzzfeed.com\/buzzfeed-static\/static\/2019-12\/12\/21\/asset\/df1fd3650f8b\/sub-buzz-3224-1576185674-1.png?downsize=800:*&amp;output-format=auto&amp;output-quality=auto\" alt=\"YouTube's End-Of-Year Videos Are Historically Bad. This Year It Somehow Got Hilariously Worse.\n\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Some are even going back to the 2018 video to reminisce. In comparison, they said, this bad video isn\u2019t so bad! \u201cAt least they tried,\u201d commenters wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/img.buzzfeed.com\/buzzfeed-static\/static\/2019-12\/12\/21\/asset\/04d0b24a96a2\/sub-buzz-3266-1576185702-2.png?downsize=800:*&amp;output-format=auto&amp;output-quality=auto\" alt=\"YouTube's End-Of-Year Videos Are Historically Bad. This Year It Somehow Got Hilariously Worse.\n\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>YouTube essentially said, \u201cOh, you guys hated that stuff? Well, here are some clips we slapped together.\u201d Somehow, that made people even more frustrated. Others are simply tickled by the fact that YouTube can\u2019t seem to make a video that its community likes on its own platform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I reached out to the company for comment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/img.buzzfeed.com\/buzzfeed-static\/static\/2019-12\/12\/21\/asset\/a939936c4890\/sub-buzz-3211-1576185724-8.png?downsize=800:*&amp;output-format=auto&amp;output-quality=auto\" alt=\"YouTube's End-Of-Year Videos Are Historically Bad. This Year It Somehow Got Hilariously Worse.\n\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>As a YouTube consumer and observer myself, I just want the Big People at YouTube HQ to hear this: If you can\u2019t or don\u2019t want to produce a year-end reflection video that\u2019s both spirited and coherent&#8230;give us the bad stuff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In hindsight, the videos don\u2019t seem that bad after all. In fact, maybe they\u2019re becoming cult status. Scratch that \u2014 make them worse! Just jumble a bunch of dialogue together and cut them into sequences that don\u2019t make any sense. Absurdism is art after all, and cool internet kids love that shit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A bit tangentially, but this all also made me nostalgic for the time&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.buzzfeed.com\/erinchack\/this-dog-is-adorably-bad-at-catching-treats-in-her-mouth\">BuzzFeed wrote whole articles<\/a>&nbsp;(I wrote some of them) dedicated to a single YouTube video going viral. Those were simpler times.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to brand-pivot from wedding influencer to divorce influencer and be accepted as authentic&#8230;or something close to it:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/12\/10\/style\/stone-fox-bride-molly-guy-divorce.html\" target=\"_blank\">New York Times posted an article this week<\/a>&nbsp;about Molly Guy, a writer and designer. Molly created an online brand around hip, bohemian weddings \u2014 and subsequently, her hip, bohemian married life. It used to be called Stone Fox Bride, and it\u2019s now called&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/stonefoxride\/\" target=\"_blank\">Stone Fox Ride<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The name change happened about two years ago, when Molly and her husband separated. However, she told reporter Allie Jones, she continued to maintain the public image of a happily married life for about a year due to her \u201cfear of losing authority as an expert on weddings and all things happily ever after.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(The article also had all kinds of fascinating \u2014 and irksome \u2014 tidbits about how one is able to abandon a normal 9-to-5 life to become a small-business owner and eventually become an influencer full time. Like this one: \u201cMs. Guy secured $250,000 in investment from her brother-in-law, Peter Shapiro, the owner of Brooklyn Bowl.\u201d Sounds nice.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When she finally fessed up to her followers about her failed marriage in 2018, her fans were supportive. \u201cIn fact, the post got more \u2018likes\u2019 than any wedding photos she\u2019d shared before,\u201d Jones wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The more Molly wrote about her split, the more her followers began to ask her for advice on how to weather splits of their own. They wanted her take on how to deal with and dress themselves for \u201ca stylish and spiritual divorce.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Molly\u2019s Instagram is now filled with the ups and downs&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/B4TKMuOJwEi\/\" target=\"_blank\">of co-parenting<\/a>&nbsp;and posts declaring that despite everything,&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/B5TRyaBpY7g\/\" target=\"_blank\">she still loves and respects her ex<\/a>. This shift reminds me of Eva Amurri Martino, aka Happily Eva After (we featured in the newsletter a few weeks ago for \u2018gramming through her split). Eva has been posting through her apparently&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/B44uJuPhEjo\/\" target=\"_blank\">super-amicable divorce<\/a>&nbsp;from her husband while she\u2019s 5 months pregnant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This article, however, shows us how to successfully execute that brand pivot over several years. Molly has fully embraced the emotional exhaustion of divorce and the ~realness~ that so many followers now crave. Unlike Eva\u2019s seemingly perfect transition from her seemingly perfect divorce to her seemingly perfect single, pregnant motherhood, Molly decided to post more \u201creal\u201d images with captions about her \u201cmessy personal life and her anxieties,\u201d the article said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recent posts on her Instagram feed discuss the&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/ByanD3kJSC-\/\" target=\"_blank\">messiness of navigating single life again<\/a>, dating as a&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/B4x-SMqpAOT\/\" target=\"_blank\">quote-unquote older woman and divorc\u00e9<\/a>, the&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/B4TKMuOJwEi\/\" target=\"_blank\">joys of co-parenting<\/a>, and the resentments she still holds against her ex. These posts stand in stark contrast to the&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/BTpoZpAFAVE\/\" target=\"_blank\">fairy-tale proposal stories<\/a>&nbsp;she used to crowdsource and share a few years ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As more married influencers reckon with the reality of life, I wonder if the genre of Divorce Influencer will grow. What kinds of products can Divorce Influencers shill? Will other big corporations and brands find sexy and wholesome ways to align themselves with divorce? Will we debate the merits of idealistic divorce content versus so-called ~real~ divorce content?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I have a lot of questions.
