[GoPay], Ltd.), making <a href=\"http:\/\/www.PayPal.com\">PayPal<\/a> the first foreign <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazzlepop.net\/site\/category\/business\/\">payment platform<\/a> to provide online payment services in China. The transaction was<a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2019\/09\/30\/paypal-to-enter-china-through-gopay-acquisition\/\">&nbsp;approved by the People\u2019s Bank of China on September 30<\/a>&nbsp;and has now closed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Deal terms have not been disclosed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>GoPay has licenses for both online and mobile transactions, and mainly provides payment products for industries including e-commerce, cross-border commerce, tourism and others. Similar to PayPal, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gopay.com\">GoPay<\/a> allows merchants to accept payments on their websites when customers are shopping online. Though China\u2019s payment market today is led by local players, including eWallet providers like <a href=\"https:\/\/intl.alipay.com\/\">AliPay<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/pay.weixin.qq.com\/index.php\/public\/wechatpay\">WeChat Pay<\/a>, there\u2019s room for PayPal to grow in a market where digital payments per year\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/tech\/apps-gaming\/article\/2134011\/china-pulls-further-ahead-us-mobile-payments-record-us128-trillion\">are counted in the trillions<\/a>, not billions, of dollars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>On the mobile payments side alone, the market is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 21.8%, from US$29.93 trillion in 2017 to $96.73 trillion in 2023, driven partly by increasing demand for e-commerce,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.prnewswire.com\/in\/news-releases\/frost-amp-sullivan-mobile-payments-market-in-china-is-expected-to-witness-three-fold-growth-with-doubling-of-active-mobile-payment-users-by-2023-877474973.html\">according to a forecast from Frost &amp; Sullivan.<\/a>&nbsp;And the total number of active mobile payment customers is expected to reach 956 million by 2023, as well, the firm said. The market has also seen an increase in cross-border transactions, particularly in sectors like e-commerce, travel and overseas education. These&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cfo.com\/payments\/2019\/10\/paypal-investment-positions-it-for-china-entry\/\">reached<\/a>&nbsp;$6.66 trillion in 2016.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>U.S. financial services firms have for a long time struggled to enter China. Last year, China\u2019s central bank said it would&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/think.ing.com\/articles\/welcome-to-china-foreign-payment-companies\/\">open up further to foreign payment companies,<\/a>&nbsp;but approvals have been slow. In November 2018, American Express notably&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/china-approves-american-express-card-service-addressing-u-s-concerns-about-markets-1541766874?mod=article_inline\">became<\/a>&nbsp;the first U.S. card network to gain permission to set up card-clearing services in China.
