{"id":5211,"date":"2019-12-25T09:06:33","date_gmt":"2019-12-25T07:06:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.dazzlepop.net\/site\/?p=5211"},"modified":"2020-03-19T08:04:07","modified_gmt":"2020-03-19T06:04:07","slug":"7-tips-to-optimize-crawl-budget-for-seo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dazzlepop.net\/site\/7-tips-to-optimize-crawl-budget-for-seo\/","title":{"rendered":"7 Tips to Optimize Crawl Budget for SEO"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"text-align:center\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\";https:\/\/cdn.searchenginejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/7-tips-to-optimize-crawl-budget-for-seo-5e00b1862d16d.webp\" class=\"attachment-post-thumbnail size-post-thumbnail wp-post-image\" alt=\"7 Tips to Optimize Crawl Budget for SEO\" title=\"7 Tips to Optimize Crawl Budget for SEO\" \/><\/div>\n<p>7 Tips to Optimize Crawl Budget for SEO<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Crawl budget is a vital <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazzlepop.net\/site\/category\/seo\/\">SEO<\/a> concept that often gets overlooked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are so many&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.searchenginejournal.com\/seo-maintenance-checklist-crucial-daily-monthly-quarterly-yearly-tasks\/293759\/\">tasks<\/a>&nbsp;and issues an SEO expert has to keep in mind that it\u2019s often put on the back burner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.searchenginejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/7-Simple-Tips-That-Will-Help-You-Optimize-Your-Keyword-List-552x488.png\" alt=\"7 Tips to Optimize Crawl Budget for SEO \" \/><figcaption>7 Tips to Optimize Crawl Budget for SEO<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In short, crawl budget can, and should, be optimized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this article, you will learn:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>How to improve your crawl budget along the way.<\/li><li>Go over the changes to crawl budget as a concept in the last couple of years.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Is Crawl Budget<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>So for those of us who\u2019ve had so much to think\/worry\/sweat about that we forgot what crawl budget even means, here\u2019s a quick recap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Crawl budget is simply the frequency with which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazzlepop.net\/site\/category\/seo\/\">search engin<\/a>e\u2019s crawlers (i.e., spiders and bots) go over the pages of your domain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That frequency is conceptualized as a&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.seroundtable.com\/googles-gary-illyes-crawl-budget-scheduling-host-load-22097.html\" target=\"_blank\">tentative balance<\/a>&nbsp;between Googlebot\u2019s attempts to not overcrowd your server and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\">Google<\/a>\u2019s overall desire to crawl your domain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Crawl budget optimization is just a series of steps that you can take specifically to up the rate at which search engines\u2019 bots visit your pages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The more often they visit, the quicker it gets into the index that the pages have been updated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Consequently, your optimization efforts will take less time to take hold and start affecting your rankings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With that wording, it certainly sounds like the most important thing we all should be doing every second, right?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Well, not entirely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why Is Crawl Budget Optimization Neglected?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To answer that question, you only need to take a look at this&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/webmasters.googleblog.com\/2017\/01\/what-crawl-budget-means-for-googlebot.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">official blog post<\/a>&nbsp;by Google.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As Google explains plainly, crawling by itself is not a ranking factor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So that alone is enough to stop certain SEO professionals from even thinking about crawl budget.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To many of us, \u201cnot a ranking factor\u201d is equated to \u201cnot my problem.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I disagree with that wholeheartedly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But even forgetting that, there are Google\u2019s Gary Illyes\u2019 comments. He has stated&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.searchenginejournal.com\/gary-illyes-whats-new-in-google-search-pubcon-keynote-recap\/274273\/\">outright<\/a>&nbsp;that, sure, for a huge website of millions and millions of pages, crawl budget management makes sense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But if you\u2019re a modestly-sized domain, then you don\u2019t have to actually concern yourself too much with crawl budget. (And in fact added that if you really have millions and millions of pages, you should consider cutting some content, which would be beneficial for your domain in general.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But, as we all know, SEO is not at all a game of changing one big factor and getting the results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>SEO is very much a process of making small, incremental changes, taking care of dozens of metrics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our job, in a big way, is about making sure that thousands of tiny little things are as optimized as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition, although it\u2019s not a big crawling factor by itself, as Google\u2019s John Mueller&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JohnMu\/status\/1001891294757769217?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1001891294757769217&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fsearchengineland.com%2Fhow-crawl-budget-has-changed-in-the-last-2-years-316862\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">points out<\/a>, it\u2019s good for conversions and for the overall website health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With all that said, I feel it\u2019s important to make sure that nothing on your website is actively hurting your crawl budget.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to Optimize Your Crawl Budget Today<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There are still things that are super heavy-duty and others\u2019 importance has changed dramatically to a point of not being relevant at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You still need to pay attention to what I call the \u201cusual suspects\u201d of website health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Allow Crawling of Your Important Pages in Robots.Txt<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a no-brainer, and a natural first and most important step.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Managing robots.txt can be done by hand, or using a website auditor tool.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I prefer to use a tool whenever possible. This is one of the instances where a tool is simply more convenient and effective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Simply add your robots.txt to the tool of your choice&nbsp;will allow you to allow\/block crawling of any page of your domain in seconds. Then you\u2019ll simply upload an edited document and&nbsp;<em>voila<\/em>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Obviously, anybody can pretty much do it by hand. But from my personal experience I know that with a really large website, where frequent calibrations might be needed, it\u2019s just so much easier to let a tool help you out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Watch Out for Redirect Chains<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a common-sense approach to website health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ideally, you would be able to avoid having even a single redirect chain on your entire domain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Honestly, it\u2019s an impossible task for a really large website \u2013&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.searchenginejournal.com\/301-vs-302-redirects-seo\/299843\/\">301 and 302 redirects<\/a>&nbsp;are bound to appear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But a bunch of those, chained together, definitely hurt your crawl limit, to a point where search engine\u2019s crawler might simply stop crawling without getting to the page you need indexed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One or two redirects here and there might not damage you much, but it\u2019s something that everybody needs to take good care of nevertheless.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Use HTML Whenever Possible<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, if we\u2019re talking Google, then it has to be said that its crawler got quite a bit better at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.searchenginejournal.com\/google-publishes-a-new-guide-to-javascript-seo-basics\/317381\/\">crawling JavaScript<\/a>&nbsp;in particular, but also improved in crawling and indexing Flash and XML.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the other hand,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.searchenginejournal.com\/alternative-search-engines\/271409\/\">other search engines<\/a>&nbsp;aren\u2019t quite there yet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because of that, my personal standpoint is, whenever possible, you should stick to HTML.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That way, you\u2019re not hurting your chances with any crawler for sure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Don\u2019t Let HTTP Errors Eat Your Crawl Budget<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Technically,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.searchenginejournal.com\/google-404-status\/254429\/\">404 and 410 pages<\/a>&nbsp;eat into your crawl budget.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And if that wasn\u2019t bad enough, they also hurt your user experience!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is exactly why fixing all 4xx and 5xx status codes is really a win-win situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this case, again, I\u2019m in favor of using a tool for website audit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>SE Ranking and Screaming Frog are a couple of great tools SEO professionals use to do a website audit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. Take Care of Your URL Parameters<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Always keep in mind that separate URLs are counted by crawlers as separate pages, wasting invaluable crawl budget.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Again, letting Google know about these URL parameters will be a win-win situation, save your crawl budget, as well as avoid raising concerns about duplicate content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So be sure to add them to your Google Search Console account.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">6. Update Your Sitemap<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Once again, it\u2019s a real win-win to take care of your XML sitemap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The bots will have a much better and easier time understanding where the internal links lead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Use only the URLs that are canonical for your sitemap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also, make sure that it corresponds to the newest uploaded version of robots.txt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">7. Hreflang Tags Are Vital<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In order to analyze your localized pages, crawlers employ hreflang tags. And you should be&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/webmasters\/answer\/189077?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">telling Google<\/a>&nbsp;about localized versions of your pages as clearly as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First off, use the&nbsp;<code>&lt;link rel=\"alternate\" hreflang=\"<a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/webmasters\/answer\/189077?hl=en#language-codes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">lang_code<\/a>\" href=\"url_of_page\" \/&gt;<\/code>&nbsp;in your page\u2019s header. Where \u201clang_code\u201d is a code for a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/webmasters\/answer\/189077?hl=en#language-codes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">supported language<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And you should use the &lt;loc&gt; element for any given URL.
