Along the way, many myths have presented themselves as facts. But no longer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This article will:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.searchenginejournal.com\/technical-seo\/pagination\/#debunk\">Debunk the myths around how pagination hurts SEO.<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.searchenginejournal.com\/technical-seo\/pagination\/#present\">Present the optimal way to manage pagination.<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.searchenginejournal.com\/technical-seo\/pagination\/#review\">Review misunderstood or subpar methods of pagination handling.<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.searchenginejournal.com\/technical-seo\/pagination\/#investigate\">Investigate how to track the KPI impact of pagination.<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"debunk\">How Pagination Can Hurt SEO<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ve probably read that pagination is bad for SEO.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, in most cases, this is due to a lack of correct pagination handling, rather than the existence of pagination itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s look at the supposed evils of pagination and how to overcome the SEO issues it could cause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pagination Causes Duplicate Content<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Correct if<\/strong>&nbsp;pagination has been improperly implemented, such as having both a \u201cView All\u201d page and paginated pages without a correct rel=canonical or if you have created a page=1 in addition to your root page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Incorrect when<\/strong>&nbsp;you have SEO friendly pagination. Even if your H1 and meta tags are the same, the actual page content differs. So it\u2019s not duplication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pagination Creates Thin Content<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Correct if<\/strong>&nbsp;you have split an article or photo gallery across multiple pages (in order to drive ad revenue by increasing pageviews), leaving too little content on each page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Incorrect when<\/strong>&nbsp;you put the desires of the user to easily consume your content above that of banner ad revenues or artificially inflated pageviews. Put a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.searchenginejournal.com\/what-is-thin-content-how-to-fix-it\/270583\/\">UX-friendly amount of content<\/a>&nbsp;on each page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pagination Dilutes Ranking Signals<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Correct.<\/strong>&nbsp;Pagination causes internal link equity and other ranking signals, such as backlinks and social shares, to be split across pages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>But can be minimized by<\/strong>&nbsp;using pagination only in cases where a single-page content approach would cause poor user experience (for example, ecommerce category pages). And on such pages, adding as many items as possible, without slowing down the page to a noticeable level, to reduce the number of paginated pages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pagination Uses Crawl Budget<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Correct if<\/strong>&nbsp;you\u2019re allowing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazzlepop.net\/site\/category\/seo\/\">Google<\/a> to crawl paginated pages. And there are some instances where you would want to use that budget.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, for Googlebot to travel through paginated URLs to reach deeper content pages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Often incorrect when<\/strong>&nbsp;you set&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.searchenginejournal.com\/google-search-console-guide\/209318\/\">Google Search Console<\/a>&nbsp;pagination parameter handling to \u201cDo not crawl\u201d or set a robots.txt disallow, in the case where you wish to conserve your crawl budget for more important pages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"present\">Managing Pagination According to SEO Best Practices<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Use Crawlable Anchor Links<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.searchenginejournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/seo-pagination-rel-prev-next.png\" alt=\"SEO-Friendly Pagination: A Complete Best Practices Guide\" \/><figcaption>SEO-Friendly Pagination: A Complete Best Practices Guide<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>For search engines to efficiently crawl paginated pages, the site must have anchor links with href attributes to these paginated URLs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Be sure your site uses &lt;a href=\u201dyour-paginated-url-here\u201d&gt; for internal linking to paginated pages. Don\u2019t loaded paginated anchor links or href attribute via JavaScript.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, you should indicate the relationship between component URLs in a paginated series with rel=\u201dnext\u201d and rel=\u201dprev\u201d attributes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes, even after Google\u2019s infamous Tweet that they no longer use these link attributes at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Shortly afterward, Ilya Grigorik clarified that rel=\u201cnext\u201d \/ \u201dprev\u201d can still be valuable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Google is not the only search engine in town. Here is Bing\u2019s take on the issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Complement the rel=\u201dnext\u201d \/ \u201cprev\u201d with a self-referencing rel=\u201dcanonical\u201d link. So \/category?page=4 should rel=\u201dcanonical\u201d to \/category?page=4.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is appropriate as pagination changes the page content and so is the master copy of that page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the URL has additional parameters, include these in the rel=\u201dprev\u201d \/ \u201cnext\u201d links, but don\u2019t include them in the rel=\u201dcanonical\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><code>&lt;link rel=\"next\" href=\"https:\/\/www.example.com\/category?page=2&amp;order=newest\" \/&gt;<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><code>&lt;link rel=\"canonical\" href=\"https:\/\/www.example.com\/category?page=2\" \/&gt;<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Doing so will indicate a clear relationship between the pages and prevent the potential of duplicate content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Common errors to avoid:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Placing the link attributes in the\u00a0<code>&lt;body&gt;<\/code>\u00a0content. They\u2019re only supported by search engines within the\u00a0<code>&lt;head&gt;<\/code>\u00a0section of your HTML.<\/li><li>Adding a rel=\u201dprev\u201d link to the first page (a.k.a. the root page) in the series or a rel=\u201dnext\u201d link to the last. For all other pages in the chain, both link attributes should be present.<\/li><li>Beware of your root page canonical URL.
