Instead, sites like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazzlepop.net\/site\/category\/business\/\">Amazon<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazzlepop.net\/site\/category\/business\/\">Google<\/a>, or online travel agency Expedia benefit.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe two most important players in this chain are the publisher who inspired a consumer to take action and the companies that actually deliver the product,\u201d BuzzFeed cofounder Jonah Peretti&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.buzzfeed.com\/amphtml\/jonah\/buzzfeed-in-2020\" target=\"_blank\">wrote Friday<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBut most of the profit is captured by digital middlemen who didn\u2019t create much value.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The site wants to solve this so-called \u201cattribution problem\u201d by instead forming partnerships directly with the providers of the goods, like airlines, hotels, or brands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While BuzzFeed and many other sites already use affiliate linking for products in gift guides or round-ups, where they get a small payout for any purchase made, the idea is to make the model more lucrative and expand to new industries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, Peretti mentions a plant subscription service the company recently launched in partnership with Scott\u2019s Miracle-Gro.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The general critique \u2014 that Google and other platforms unduly siphon profits \u2014 has come under closer scrutiny recently as antitrust investigations heat up against the tech giants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last fall,&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/edible-arrangements-and-basecamp-ceo-speak-out-over-google-ads-2019-9\" target=\"_blank\">business owners rallied against<\/a>&nbsp;Google for allowing businesses to advertise against a competitor\u2019s name.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>BuzzFeed\u2019s commerce expansion is part of its roadmap for 2020, which also includes paid social features and a greater reliance on primary documents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Read more:  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/jilliandonfro\/2020\/01\/05\/buzzfeed-jonah-peretti-google-digital-middleman\/#30853d53edd6\">https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/jilliandonfro\/2020\/01\/05\/buzzfeed-jonah-peretti-google-digital-middleman\/#30853d53edd6<\/a> <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>BuzzFeed Aims To Cut Out Google \u201cMiddlemen\u201d BuzzFeed founder and CEO Jonah Peretti said that the site will continue to cut out digital&nbsp;&#8220;middlemen.&#8221;&nbsp;CORBIS VIA GETTY IMAGES BuzzFeed plans to solve a \u201clongstanding problem in the media\u201d by cutting out \u201cmiddlemen\u201d like Google as it expands its commerce business.
