{"id":5828,"date":"2020-01-13T15:59:31","date_gmt":"2020-01-13T13:59:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.dazzlepop.net\/site\/?p=5828"},"modified":"2020-01-13T15:59:34","modified_gmt":"2020-01-13T13:59:34","slug":"five-strategies-to-make-a-raise","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dazzlepop.net\/site\/five-strategies-to-make-a-raise\/","title":{"rendered":"Five Strategies to Make a Raise"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"text-align:center\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\";https:\/\/assets.entrepreneur.com\/content\/3x2\/2000\/20191101200537-GettyImages-1018188310.jpeg?width=700&amp;crop=2:1\" class=\"attachment-post-thumbnail size-post-thumbnail wp-post-image\" alt=\"Five Strategies to Make a Raise\" title=\"Five Strategies to Make a Raise\" \/><\/div>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Five Strategies to Make a Raise<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p> Five magic words: &#8216;Is there any wiggle room?&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>About six in 10 workers are heading into the holiday season with bigger paychecks than last year, according to a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.magnifymoney.com\/blog\/news\/gender-gap-pay-raises-promotions-study\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">recent survey<\/a>&nbsp;by MagnifyMoney \u2014 and about half of those who received a raise said it was accompanied by a promotion.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s all well and good, but categorizing the results by gender yielded some disconcerting figures: More men reported pay increases than women (64 percent vs. 52 percent), and men were also more likely than women to receive a promotion alongside their raise (54 percent vs. 37 percent).\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.entrepreneur.com\/content\/3x2\/2000\/20191101200537-GettyImages-1018188310.jpeg?width=700&amp;crop=2:1\" alt=\"Five Strategies to Make a Raise\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Data from the United States Census Bureau backs that up: The real median earnings of all U.S. workers&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\/library\/publications\/2019\/demo\/p60-266.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">increased 3.4 percent<\/a>&nbsp;between 2017 and 2018, but when you break down those median earnings by gender, men made almost $10,000 more than women.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This barrage of negative numbers doesn\u2019t do much to help boost women\u2019s confidence in the raise department: About two in 10 women doubted they\u2019d receive a raise in the next year, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazzlepop.net\/site\/category\/business\/\">MagnifyMoney\u2019s survey<\/a> \u2014 more than twice the amount of men who said the same. And believing you deserve a raise is oftentimes the first step towards getting one.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To that end, here are five key tips for the next time you ask for a salary boost (even if it\u2019s your first time).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To start, Lewis C. Lin, author of\u00a0<em>71 Brilliant Salary Negotiation Samples<\/em>, has five magic words that can mean real progress in any negotiation: \u201cIs there any wiggle room?\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pay attention to timing.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Read the room. When you\u2019re deciding when to set up your raise conversation, avoid days (and times of day) when your manager is often stressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ask when you\u2019ve recently gotten a significant piece of praise or completed a notable task; otherwise, align your ask with your company\u2019s performance review cycle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Check sites like Glassdoor and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazzlepop.net\/site\/category\/business\/\">PayScale<\/a> to make sure you\u2019re asking for a raise that makes sense based on your title, industry and location.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And to avoid your manager feeling blindsided by the request, ask them a few days in advance about setting up a time to discuss your \u201ccompensation and career
