It has assembled \u201cwar rooms\u201d and published white papers. It has hired thousands of content moderators (as in, they\u2019re looking at content; they\u2019re actually miserable). And the company is constantly reminding people that it\u2019s spending more on security now than the total of its revenue at the beginning of the decade. Big numbers! Facebook cares!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s too bad that all it took was&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/nymag.com\/intelligencer\/2020\/02\/the-case-for-michael-bloomberg-democratic-primary-plutocracy.html\">one aspirational billionaire<\/a>&nbsp;to reveal most of that effort as completely ineffective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the past couple of weeks, candidate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazzlepop.net\/site\/category\/social-media\/\">Mike Bloomberg<\/a> has rolled out an aggressive program of buying endorsements on social media. He isn\u2019t just asking celebrities and other mayors (of smaller cities) for their backing or&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/nymag.com\/intelligencer\/2020\/02\/why-mike-bloomberg-posted-pictures-of-meatballs.html\">posting weird tweets<\/a>: Last week, a number of popular <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazzlepop.net\/site\/category\/social-media\/\">Instagram<\/a> accounts with tens of millions of followers rolled out jokey sponcon for the former New York City mayor. Today,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/bloomberg-bankrolls-a-social-media-army-to-push-message-11582127768\"><em>The Wall Street Journal<\/em><\/a>&nbsp;is reporting that Bloomberg\u2019s campaign will go one step further by paying regular social-media users to post about the candidate on the platforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From the&nbsp;<em>Journal<\/em>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>The campaign is hiring more than 500 \u201cdeputy digital organizers\u201d to work 20 to 30 hours a week and receive $2,500 a month, the documents show. In exchange, those workers are expected to promote Mr. Bloomberg to everyone in their phones\u2019 contacts by text each week and make social-media posts supporting him daily, the documents show.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s.yimg.com\/uu\/api\/res\/1.2\/9tq6HMYQS_Cb_kKwsGNAbQ--~B\/aD02ODM7dz0xMDI0O3NtPTE7YXBwaWQ9eXRhY2h5b24-\/https:\/\/media.zenfs.com\/en-ca\/the_canadian_press_business_130\/3e0790e07a3d67b40960f4f595941482\" alt=\"No Match for Bloomberg\u2019s Billions on Facebook\u2019s Election Rules \" width=\"580\" height=\"386\" \/><figcaption>No Match for Bloomberg\u2019s Billions on Facebook\u2019s Election Rules<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s more than $1.25 million Bloomberg is spending just to kinda shotgun his name all over social media and into group chats. This comes in addition to a reported program for \u201cmicroinfluencers,\u201d i.e., people with small follower counts, whom Bloomberg would&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/mike-bloomberg-is-paying-influencers-to-make-him-seem-cool-9\">pay $150 in exchange for their support<\/a>.
