Conley is founder of Joie de Vivre hotels&#8211;the second largest operator of boutique hotels in the U.S.&#8211;as well as author of several must-read leadership books, including\u00a0<em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Rebel-Rules-Daring-Yourself-Business\/dp\/0684865165\">The Rebel Rules<\/a><\/em>,\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Wisdom-Work-Making-Modern-Elder\/dp\/0525572902\/ref=sr_1_1?crid=LGPEAHPPCD37&amp;keywords=wisdom+at+work&amp;qid=1582227559&amp;s=books&amp;sprefix=wisdom+at+work%2Cstripbooks%2C1927&amp;sr=1-1\"><em>Wisdom at Work<\/em><\/a>, and\u00a0<em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/PEAK-Companies-Maslow-Revised-Updated\/dp\/1119434920\/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=peak+chip&amp;qid=1582227592&amp;s=books&amp;sr=1-1\">Peak<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What turned this offer into a business inspiration was how it evolved: What Airbnb valued most wasn&#8217;t Conley&#8217;s subject matter expertise but his wisdom. &#8220;I agreed to give Brian 15 hours a week as his leadership mentor. That quickly turned into 15-hour days,&#8221; Conley tells me.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.incimages.com\/uploaded_files\/image\/300x200\/getty_855515858_2000133320009280111_412900.jpg\" alt=\"Young Startup Needs the Wisdom of Elders\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Inspired by his Airbnb experience, Conley launched an educational institute called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazzlepop.net\/site\/category\/startup\/\">Modern Elder Academy<\/a> (MEA), essentially a wisdom school for midlife. At Airbnb, Conley was nicknamed the &#8220;Modern Elder,&#8221; and he wants to return the word to its original connotations of wisdom and perspective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>MEA is born of technology&#8217;s disparate impact on the young and the old.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.inc.com\/christina-desmarais\/25-tech-predictions-for-2020.html?cid=search\">Tech disruption<\/a>&nbsp;is putting more digitally native young entrepreneurs at the heads of companies. The result is often a mismatch between technological prowess and leadership ability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The business world is full of brilliant young people with great ideas about disrupting the status quo,&#8221; Conley says. But, he adds, &#8220;We expect them to miraculously embody leadership skills and emotional intelligence that actually take decades to develop.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the same time, the older workers being sidelined actually have those qualities in abundance and are looking for ways to put their skills to work.
