Oracle boots out Microsoft and wins bid for TikTok, reports say<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Enterprise provider\u00a0Oracle\u00a0<\/a>\u00a0is\u00a0said to have won<\/a>\u00a0the bidding war for the U.S. operations of TikTok<\/a>, a chase in which Microsoft <\/a>was booted from earlier today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A TikTok <\/strong><\/a> spokesperson said the company \u201c[doesn\u2019t] comment on rumors or speculation.\u201d Oracle did not immediately respond to TechCrunch for comment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\u00a0Wall Street Journal<\/a>\u00a0writes that Oracle, a rare ally of the Trump administration in Silicon Valley, will be announced as TikTok\u2019s \u201ctrusted tech partner\u201d in the United States. Additionally, the Journal cites that a person familiar with the matter says the deal is \u201clikely not to be structured as an outright sale.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Oracle\u2019s alleged purchase of TikTok\u2019s U.S. operations would put an end to the unclear fate of the app within the country. The app\u2019s reported buy comes days before September 20, the day that the Trump administration set<\/a> for a ban on TikTok\u2019s operations if the company doesn\u2019t reach an agreement with a buyer. But there\u2019s much confusion about which deadline TikTok will adhere to as Trump said<\/a> last week \u201cthere will be no extension\u201d of the September 15 deadline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Sunday, Microsoft said its bid for the U.S. operations of TikTok has been rejected by the app\u2019s parent company, ByteDance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe are confident our proposal would have been good for TikTok\u2019s users, while protecting national security interests,\u201d the statement read, stating that Microsoft would make \u201csignificant changes\u201d around security, privacy, online safety, and disinformation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe look forward to seeing how the service evolves in these important areas,\u201d the statement added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Issues and fears around TikTok\u2019s security has been a flagship issue for the app. TikTok was banned in India, along with 58 other apps, due to\u00a0\u201cnational security and defence\u201d<\/a>\u00a0issues. India was TikTok\u2019s biggest overseas market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to Microsoft, a number of prominent tech companies have rumored to be in the market for TikTok\u2019s U.S. operations such as Twitter, Google, and Walmart. But,\u00a0as our Ron Miller pointed out<\/a>, there\u2019s some reason toward why a company like Oracle would crave an app like TikTok: marketshare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
