Fresh content still is powerful currency when it comes to search.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ever since Google\u2019s Freshness update<\/a>, the more recent and relevant your content is, the higher its chances to rank in SERPs<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But what about the \u201cappearance\u201d of freshness?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What happens when a website tweaks old content a bit and changes the date on an article from 2014 to today?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What are the SEO benefits \u2013 and the consequences?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most importantly, how do you keep \u201cevergreen content<\/a>\u201d \u2013 content that\u2019s meant to withstand the test of time \u2013 current and relevant year after year?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this article, I\u2019ll answer these questions by examining how key influencers<\/a> in the SEO and digital marketing industry treat date stamps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019ll also discuss my strategy for combating outdated content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why Change Article Dates?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Let\u2019s start at the beginning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First off, as explained by Google\u2019s Martin Splitt, it\u2019s preferable to update an old page<\/a>, rather than create a new one with very similar content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But going beyond webpage updates, date manipulation can be quite an effective way to attract some attention on the SERP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Easiest example: somebody is searching around for keyword research guides.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They come across this kind of SERP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Obviously the keyword research guides listed here weren\u2019t actually originally posted in 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, since keyword research is very dependent on the freshest information available, a user will naturally gravitate towards the most current results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This means that the benefit of updating your content regularly is two-fold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First, it appeals to users, because we naturally want to read the most current and up-to-date information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This means date updates increase CTR, one of the essential SEO metrics<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Second, depending on the competitive vertical, the search engine itself might understand that being current is paramount.<\/p>\n\n\n
