The sheer length of the pandemic means we can\u2019t continue to function in full-scale crisis mode, but many of us simply aren\u2019t \u201cbusiness as usual\u201d yet. How do we move our efforts forward in smart, meaningful ways that are sensitive to this ever-changing climate?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the \u201cDigital 2020\u201d report, released at the beginning of the year,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/hootsuite.com\/newsroom\/press-releases\/digital-2020-social-media-use-spans-almost-half-global-population\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">4.54 billion people<\/a>\u00a0worldwide were using the internet. That\u2019s a 7% increase from the previous year, and we\u2019re nearing 60% worldwide internet penetration.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-apps\/imrs.php?src=https:\/\/arc-anglerfish-washpost-prod-washpost.s3.amazonaws.com\/public\/YJC44Q5BC5H3HJRRLLFYJUBO2Y.jpg&amp;w=1440\" alt=\"Your Social Media Efforts Must Refocus During The Pandemic \" \/><figcaption>Your Social Media Efforts Must Refocus During The Pandemic<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Once the pandemic hit, internet and social media use\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/5810991\/internet-coronavirus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">increased<\/a>\u00a0across demographics. More time is being spent on social media sites, but the\u00a0<em>ways\u00a0<\/em>people are using social media has changed. Here is what marketing executives and social media managers need to know now:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1. Logging In For News<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s no surprise that back in March and April of this year, people flocked online to get updates on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazzlepop.net\/site\/category\/social-media\/\">Covid-19<\/a>. Many chose to visit specific social media channels, and they used those channels\u2019 internal search engines to find updates, news and information. We had started to see this trend in news consumerism over the last few years. Last year, for example,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.journalism.org\/2019\/10\/02\/americans-are-wary-of-the-role-social-media-sites-play-in-delivering-the-news\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">55%<\/a>\u00a0of Americans got at least some of their news from social media.\u00a0But reliance on social media for news seemed to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/news.gallup.com\/poll\/311360\/americans-social-media-covid-information-connection.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">really take off<\/a>\u00a0in response to the pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With so many people using social media for news, it\u2019s important that your content stay topical and also sensitive to the news cycle. While your brand may be fun or sarcastic, you\u2019ll need to understand how your content might be viewed in a user\u2019s feed when sandwiched between two news stories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That said, embrace this trend and share news about your business! Your customers and even your employees might be looking at your social media for updates \u2014 to see if you\u2019ve made modifications to your services during the pandemic or find out if you\u2019re
