In the latest case of social media privacy and security limitations, Facebook-owned messaging app WhatsApp has announced it will restrict the number of times an individual message can be forwarded.<\/p>\n

WhatsApp\u2019s vice president for policy and communications, Victoria Grand, announced the update at an event in Jakarta on Monday,\u00a0Reuters reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The messaging company first rolled out the new restrictions for users in India last summer after\u00a0a series of lynchings<\/a>\u00a0that allegedly followed\u00a0fake news reports<\/a>\u00a0shared on the platform. Five men were killed in Maharashtra\u2019s Dhule district after rumors of kidnappings overwhelmed Indian WhatsApp users. Dozens of others had been killed because of similar false messages on WhatsApp, according to\u00a0the\u00a0Times of India<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n

WhatsApp\u2019s initial forwarding restrictions were introduced soon after July\u2019s lynchings, partially in response to\u00a0demands by India\u2019s government<\/a>. \u201cWe believe that these changes \u2013 which we\u2019ll continue to evaluate \u2013 will help keep WhatsApp the way it was designed to be: a private messaging app,\u201d the company explained in a\u00a0blog post<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Now extended to all users, the restrictions prevent any single message from being forwarded more than five times. The app previously allowed up to 20 forwards per message. \u201cWhatsApp carefully evaluated this test and listened to user feedback over a six-month period,\u201d the company said in\u00a0a statement sent to news outlets<\/a>. \u201cThe forward limit significantly reduced forwarded messages around the world.\u201d<\/p>\n

WhatsApp\u2019s parent company, Facebook,\u00a0recently said it removed hundreds of phony pages<\/a>, users and groups linked to Russia that were involved in disinformation campaigns. The operations created \u201cnetworks of accounts to mislead others about who they were and what they were doing,\u201d\u00a0according to Nathaniel Gleicher<\/a>, Facebook\u2019s head of cybersecurity policy.<\/p>\n

Facebook has also enlisted\u00a0Full Fact<\/a>, a U.K.-based nonprofit fact-checking organization, to help address and\u00a0minimize the spread of fake news<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
